Avoiding Damage to Hair Extensions
Avoiding Damage to Hair Extensions
The main things that can cause damage, breakage, and premature shortening of hair extensions:
1*Using too much heat*: Excessive heat styling, such as blow-drying, curling, or straightening, can damage both the extensions and your natural hair.
2.**Not using heat protectant**: Failing to use heat protectant products before heat styling can cause the extensions to become dry and brittle.
3 **Overwashing**: Washing your hair extensions too frequently can strip them of natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage.
4 **Using the wrong products**: Using products with harsh chemicals, proteins or sulfates can damage the extensions and cause them to break.* Never* use products that rebuild or rebond the hair as it will cause breakage on hair extensions. (Never use olaplex, pantene or wella hair washing products.)
5. **Sleeping with wet hair**: Sleeping with wet hair extensions can cause tangling and breakage.
6. **Brushing improperly**: Brushing your hair extensions roughly or when they are wet can cause breakage and damage. Always brush gently from ends upwards.
7. **Not securing hair before bed**: Not tying your hair in a loose braid or ponytail before bed can lead to tangling and breakage while you sleep. Silk hair bonnets are perfect for preventing breakage during sleep.
8. **Using hair ties with metal parts or rubber hair ties**: Hair ties with metal parts can snag and break the extensions.
9. **Excessive pulling or tugging**: Avoid pulling or tugging on your hair extensions, as it can cause breakage.
10. **Chemical treatments**: Chemical treatments like hair dye, toners or perms or purple shampoo can weaken the extensions and cause breakage.
11. **Swimming with extensions**: Chlorine and saltwater can damage hair extensions, so it's important to protect them while swimming.
12. **Excessive sun exposure**: Prolonged exposure to the sun's UV rays can cause dryness and damage to the extensions.
13. **Not protecting hair during physical activities**: Friction from activities like sports can lead to tangling and breakage of hair extensions.
14. **Using hair products with alcohol**: Alcohol-based hair products can dry out the extensions and cause breakage.
15. **Washing hair in mineral or Chlorine dense water**
Many suburbs in Perth and regional areas have a very high Chlorine content, many are higher than swimming pool safe levels . This and the minerals will cause dryness and breakage . To avoid premature deterioration use a shower filter.
16: **Not using suitable leave in treatments, serum /oil **
Hair Extensions only recieve the moisture we add to them as they are not connected to our scalp. They require a leave in conditioner (such as Muk ultra soft ) and a light oil such as wella luxe oil. Natural Look shine spritz is also a great leave in to keep hair smooth , tangle free and UV protected.
17. **Not following care instructions**: Failing to follow the care instructions provided by your stylist or the hair extension manufacturer can lead to damage and breakage.
